Rotation & priority

  1. Open with Cheap Shot or Garrote, or Ambush if you hold a dagger.
  2. Build Combo Points with Sinister Strike (Backstab from behind with a dagger).
  3. Put Slice and Dice up as soon as you can and refresh it before it drops.
  4. Spend the rest on Eviscerate, ideally at 5 Combo Points while Slice and Dice is active.
  5. Use Riposte every time it lights up after a parry.
  6. On two or more mobs, press Blade Flurry. It is your only cleave.
  7. Kick, Gouge and Kidney Shot to stop casts or buy time.

Stat priority

  1. Agility (Attack Power, crit and dodge)
  2. Attack Power
  3. Crit
  4. Strength
  5. Weapons: slow main hand with Instant Poison, fast off hand with Deadly Poison

Alternatives

  • More survivability: drop Improved Eviscerate, Improved Sprint and Flawless Execution for Lightning Reflexes. You lose some finisher damage for dodge.
  • Dagger users: Puncturing Wounds 3 instead of Deflection 3 and Riposte. Backstab gains 30% crit and a 45% chance at an extra Combo Point.
  • Talented Legacy perk (+5 points): start Hack and Slash, which is the next step toward the level-60 build.
  • If you plan to respec at 30 anyway, you can park the first 2 points in Remorseless Attacks (Assassination) and move them into Dual Wield Specialization later.

Why this build

How the build works

This Combat Rogue build is the steady one. It does not depend on crits or a dagger: you hit, build Combo Points with a cheaper Sinister Strike, and spend them on a stronger Eviscerate. Improved Sinister Strike cuts 5 Energy from your main builder, Flawless Execution takes 10 Energy off Eviscerate, and Improved Eviscerate adds 20% to its damage.

Survival comes from the parry side. Deflection adds 6% parry, and each parry opens Riposte, which hits for 150% weapon damage and disarms the target for 6 seconds. Endurance cuts the cooldown of Sprint and Evasion by 60%, so you have an escape or a defensive cooldown for most bad pulls. One point in Improved Sprint gives Sprint a 50% chance to clear slows and gets you to the 15 points row 4 needs.

Precision adds 3% hit, which also covers poisons, and unlocks Dual Wield Specialization. Four points mean 20% more off-hand damage. That leaves exactly one point for Blade Flurry at 30: 20% attack speed, and every swing hits a second nearby enemy for 15 seconds.

Leveling tips

The two cheaper-ability talents come first because they speed up every kill from level 10. Deflection and Precision follow, and Riposte at level 21 is where the spec starts to feel safe. Take Endurance right after it.

Poisons come at 20: Instant Poison on a slow weapon, Deadly Poison on a fast one. Before 30, avoid pulling more than two mobs. After 30, Blade Flurry makes double pulls normal. In dungeons, Kick and Gouge are your contribution beyond damage.

Changes in WoW Forever

Flawless Execution is new. Hack and Slash replaces the four weapon specializations from Classic with one talent that changes with your weapon: an extra-attack chance for swords and axes, crit for daggers and fists, armor penetration for maces. That makes Combat friendly to every weapon type. Puncturing Wounds is the old Improved Backstab and has moved into Combat. Weapon Expertise, which reduces dodge and parry against you, now sits under Blade Flurry. The talent text here comes from client build 70630, so small number changes from later hotfixes are possible.

Toward level 60

Planned builds sit around 18/32/0 or 16/33/2: Hack and Slash, Aggression, Weapon Expertise and Adrenaline Rush in Combat, with Malice, Ruthlessness and Improved Slice and Dice from Assassination. Few players have tested Hack and Slash in game, so treat this as provisional.
