Talent order by level

  1. 10–14Malice×5
  2. 15–17Ruthlessness×3
  3. 18–20Improved Slice and Dice×3
  4. 21–25Lethality×5
  5. 26Relentless Strikes
  6. 27Cold Blood
  7. 28–29Remorseless Attacks×2

Rotation & priority

  1. Open from Stealth with Ambush (main-hand dagger).
  2. Build with Mutilate from level 30; use Sinister Strike only to top up from 4 to 5 Combo Points.
  3. Keep Slice and Dice running at all times.
  4. On long fights, apply Expose Armor at 5 Combo Points, then spend the next 5 on Eviscerate or Kidney Shot.
  5. Save Cold Blood for a 5-point Eviscerate or a Mutilate to finish a dangerous pull.
  6. Instant Poison on the main hand, Deadly Poison on the off hand. Kick casters and Feint when threat gets high.

Stat priority

  1. Agility (Attack Power, crit and dodge)
  2. Attack Power
  3. Crit, which also feeds poisons since they can crit in WoW Forever
  4. Strength
  5. Stamina for leveling safety

Alternatives

  • Poison-heavy variant: Lethality 1 plus Improved Poisons 4 instead of Lethality 5. More poison procs, less burst from builder crits.
  • Murder 2 and Improved Gouge 3 instead of Improved Slice and Dice and Remorseless Attacks, the most popular order on talentsforever. Murder pays off on Humanoids and Giants.
  • Grouping without armor reduction: put 2 points into Improved Expose Armor in place of Remorseless Attacks.
  • Talented Legacy perk (+5 points): Improved Poisons first, then Vile Poisons. Both lead toward the level-60 build.
  • No pair of daggers yet? Level as Combat and switch once you have two.

Why this build

How the build works

This Assassination Rogue build is a crit engine. Malice gives you 5% crit on every attack and every poison, and Lethality raises the crit damage bonus of your builders, Mutilate included, by 20%. Everything else in the tree keeps your Combo Points and Energy flowing so those crits keep coming.

Ruthlessness gives each finisher a 60% chance to start the next cycle with a Combo Point already on the target. Relentless Strikes refunds 25 Energy with a 20% chance per Combo Point spent, so a 5-point finisher refunds Energy every time. Improved Slice and Dice adds 45% to the buff’s duration, which means fewer finishers spent on upkeep and more on Eviscerate.

Cold Blood is your burst button: a guaranteed crit on the next Sinister Strike, Backstab, Ambush, Eviscerate or Mutilate. Remorseless Attacks gives 40% extra crit to your next builder for 20 seconds after a kill, so it rewards pulling the next mob right away.

Mutilate is the level-30 point. It hits with both weapons for 75% weapon damage plus a flat bonus, deals 20% more to poisoned targets and awards 2 Combo Points. It requires a dagger in each hand.

Leveling tips

Take Malice first: crit helps every attack you have from level 10. Ruthlessness and Improved Slice and Dice follow, so Lethality is open at 21. Until 30 you build with Sinister Strike, or Backstab if you carry a dagger. Ambush from Stealth becomes your opener at 18.

Poisons arrive at 20 through the class quest. Use Instant Poison while questing and Deadly Poison for longer fights. Assassination has no AoE, so pull one mob at a time and finish it before you start on the next. In dungeons, let the tank build threat and keep Feint ready.

Changes in WoW Forever

Mutilate and the new Venom finisher make this tree about poisons and finishers. Poisons now scale with Attack Power and can crit, and Malice covers them too. Seal Fate no longer requires Cold Blood. Puncturing Wounds is the old Improved Backstab and now also boosts Mutilate crit, but it sits in Combat. Note that the talent text we use comes from client build 70630 without hotfixes, and one calculator that includes hotfixes shows a higher flat bonus for Mutilate, so the exact number may differ in game.

Toward level 60

The plan most guides share is a 38/11/2 build: Seal Fate, Improved Poisons, Vile Poisons and the Venom capstone in Assassination, then Precision, Puncturing Wounds and Improved Eviscerate from Combat. Murder against Vigor is still being argued about. Treat this as provisional until people have played past level 30.

FAQ

What is the best Assassination Rogue build in WoW Forever?

At level 30, put all 21 points into Assassination: Malice 5, Ruthlessness 3, Improved Slice and Dice 3, Lethality 5, Relentless Strikes, Cold Blood, Remorseless Attacks 2 and Mutilate as the final point.

Is Assassination good for leveling?

Yes, as long as you have two daggers. Mutilate at 30 is a strong builder, but before that the spec plays like a plain crit rogue, and Combat is the safer choice for a first character.

What stats does an Assassination Rogue need?

Agility first, then Attack Power and crit, then Strength. Poisons scale with Attack Power and can crit in WoW Forever, so those two stats are worth more than they were in Classic.

What does the Talented Legacy perk change?

It adds up to 5 extra talent points. For Assassination the natural picks are Improved Poisons and then Vile Poisons, which are the next steps of the level-60 build anyway.
