How we rank
This is a pre-launch prediction for tanking level-60 dungeons and the first raid tier. We weigh threat on single and multiple targets, damage reduction and cooldowns, reliability (taunts, crushing blows) and how well a spec holds up across many kinds of encounters. Only the three Classic tanking specs are listed. Nothing in the client data suggests that any other spec gets a real tanking toolkit.
The ranking leans mainly on well-established Classic Era raid experience, adjusted for the Forever talent changes we can see in the game client. One caveat: the client’s Forever talent data is partly stale. Many talents only ship rank-1 text, and server hotfixes will change the trees. So we only react to clear shifts. We will update this list after launch.
- S: Can main-tank everything.
- A: Excellent, with a few encounters where it is less ideal.
- B: Great in dungeons and as an off-tank. Raid main-tanking is still to be proven.
S tier
Protection Warrior: Shield Wall, Last Stand, Taunt and Shield Block make it the most reliable main tank, as before. Shield Slam damage nearly doubles in the client data, and Bastion (+10% damage with a shield) replaces One-Handed Weapon Specialization. Both point to better threat.
A tier
Feral Druid: Bear Form already brought huge armor and health. Forever adds a Bear charge, Lacerate for steady threat, and a far bigger Heart of the Wild (+20% Stamina in Bear Form). It loses Primal Fury, and it still has no shield to block crushing blows, which keeps it just short of S.
B tier
Protection Paladin: The biggest winner in the client data. It gets Templar’s Bulwark (a one-minute absorb equal to your full health), Seal of Fury (absorbs on hit with a shield), a stronger Holy Shield and Reckoning rework. We found no taunt in the client data, so main-tanking raids is still a risk. In dungeons it already looks excellent, and it could jump to A or S if a taunt arrives in a hotfix.
