Rotation & priority

  1. Aspect of the Hawk at range; some players use Aspect of the Beast for melee-heavy play.
  2. Hunter's Mark on the target and track its creature type for Improved Tracking.
  3. Immolation Trap before the pull, then Aimed Shot, Serpent Sting and Arcane Shot as it runs in.
  4. In melee: Raptor Strike, Mongoose Bite when it lights up, and Wing Clip if it tries to run.
  5. Step back to range and shoot again when you can; Rapid Fire on cooldown.

Stat priority

  1. Agility: Ranged Attack Power, melee Attack Power and crit
  2. Hit, for both melee and ranged
  3. Intellect for mana
  4. Stamina
  5. A decent melee weapon, since half your damage comes from melee abilities

Alternatives

  • With the Talented Legacy perk (+5 points): Expose Prey x2 for Mongoose Bite procs on targets with Hunter's Mark, Survivalist's Discipline x2 for shorter trap cooldowns, and Strider Kick x1.
  • Entrapment is filler to open row 3; Survivalist (+10% Health at 5/5) or Deflection make the build safer if you die a lot.
  • Deterrence (+25% Dodge and Parry for 10 sec) instead of Clever Traps if you want an emergency button.
  • If you only want to level fast, Beast Mastery is easier; this build makes most sense for players who plan to stay Survival at 60.

Why this build

How the build works

This Survival Hunter build mixes shots and melee. Improved Tracking adds 5% damage against whatever creature type you are tracking, which while leveling is almost always the mob you are fighting. Surefooted adds 3% hit and shortens slows on you by 30%.

The melee side comes from Savage Strikes (+4% crit on melee abilities) and Predator’s Edge, which raises melee ability crit damage by 30% and off-hand damage by 50%. Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite become real damage instead of an emergency button.

Clever Traps adds 30% to Immolation and Explosive Trap damage and to Freezing and Frost Trap duration. Entrapment roots enemies for 3 sec when your traps trigger. Resourcefulness, the 21st point, cuts trap and melee ability mana costs by 30% and gives your ability crits a 50% chance to let half your mana regeneration continue while casting for 30 sec.

Only one well-known guide gives a full Survival build at level 30, and some of these points are filler. Treat it as a reasonable starting point rather than a settled answer.

Leveling tips

Survival is the hardest of the three Hunter specs to level. Its strongest talents, such as Expose Prey, Strider Kick and Lightning Reflexes, sit at or below row 5. If you die often, spend the filler points on Survivalist or Deflection instead of Entrapment.

Keep Hunter’s Mark on your target and the right tracking active. Pull with a trap and a few shots, then finish in melee. Your pet still helps, so keep it out.

These Hunter talents fit dungeons less well than Beast Mastery or Marksmanship at 30, because melee Hunters compete for space behind the mob.

Changes in WoW Forever

Survival is the most changed Hunter tree. Improved Tracking, Predator’s Edge, Resourcefulness, Expose Prey, Strider Kick, Survival Tactics and Survivalist’s Discipline are all new. Lightning Reflexes now gives 10% Agility, and Lacerating Strikes adds a bleed to Mongoose Bite. Resourcefulness was fixed in mid-October after being reported as bugged. The 28 Oct hotfix put the Entrapment, Counterattack and Improved Wing Clip roots in one diminishing returns group with Improved Hamstring and Frostbite, which matters mostly for PvP.

Toward level 60

Provisional. Two level 60 builds share almost the same Survival core (about 31 to 33 points with Predator’s Edge, Expose Prey, Lightning Reflexes and Lacerating Strikes) but split the rest differently between Marksmanship and Beast Mastery. Confidence is medium.

FAQ

What is the best Survival Hunter build in WoW Forever?

At level 30: Improved Tracking, Savage Strikes, Entrapment, Surefooted, Clever Traps, Predator's Edge and one point of Resourcefulness. All 21 points are in Survival.

Is Survival good for leveling?

It is the hardest Hunter spec to level. Its strongest melee talents come late, so many players level as Beast Mastery and switch later.

What stats does a Survival Hunter need?

Agility first, since it adds ranged and melee Attack Power plus crit, then hit. Keep your melee weapon up to date as well.

What does the Talented Legacy perk change?

It gives you up to 5 extra points at level 30. For Survival, Expose Prey, Survivalist's Discipline and Strider Kick are the picks.
