Rotation & priority

  1. Righteous Fury on; open with a Seal of the Crusader Judgement, then keep Seal of Fury up.
  2. Consecration whenever the pack is around you.
  3. Holy Shield on cooldown.
  4. Holy Strike and Judgement on cooldown, unless you are saving Judgement as a taunt.
  5. Exorcism against Undead.
  6. Templar's Bulwark when health drops fast; it applies Forbearance.

Stat priority

  1. Hit, so taunts and Judgements land
  2. Spell Power for threat from Holy damage
  3. Stamina, armor and avoidance
  4. Intellect for mana while leveling
  5. Strength (Attack Power)

Alternatives

  • With the Talented Legacy perk (+5 points): Reckoning x4 for extra attacks after blocks, then Swift Judgement x1 as a second Judgement you can save for taunting.
  • Rebuilt for the 30 Oct hotfix: One-Handed Weapon Specialization and Improved Seal of Fury were removed and Shield Specialization dropped to 2 ranks. Holy Shield moved up to row 5, so it replaces them as the payoff at 21 points.
  • Toughness is filler to open row 4; Improved Hammer of Justice or Guardian's Favor work just as well there.
  • Leveling solo? Many guides suggest Retribution points until 20 to 30, then a respec for dungeons.

Why this build

How the build works

This Protection Paladin build is built on the tree as it stands after the 30 Oct hotfix. The big change is Holy Shield: it now sits in row 5 with no other requirement, so 20 points in Protection unlock it. At level 30 it raises block chance by 30% for 10 sec, deals 75 Holy damage per block, and that damage causes 20% extra threat.

Blocking also pays for your mana. Redoubt at 5/5 gives incoming melee hits a 10% chance to add 30% block for 10 sec or 5 blocks. Shield Specialization at 2/2 adds 30% to your shield’s absorb, and blocks restore 4% of your maximum mana, at most once every 3 sec.

Templar’s Bulwark is your emergency button: an absorb shield equal to 100% of your maximum health for 8 sec. Sacred Duty takes 60 sec off its cooldown and cuts Forbearance by 10 sec. Improved Righteous Fury reduces all damage taken by 9%, and Precision adds 3% hit so taunts and Judgements land.

Leveling tips

Redoubt and Precision come first, then Sacred Duty to open row 3 by level 19. Templar’s Bulwark arrives at level 20, Improved Righteous Fury at the mid twenties, and Holy Shield at 30. Righteous Fury itself is now learned at level 10, so you can tank early dungeons.

Protection levels by AoE. Pull about four mobs, drop Consecration, and keep Holy Strike and Judgement on cooldown. Consecration hits fewer targets for full value beyond four, so larger pulls give less back. If you mainly quest alone, many players stay Retribution and respec for groups. These Paladin talents are aimed at dungeon tanking first.

Changes in WoW Forever

The 30 Oct hotfix rebuilt the Paladin trees. In Protection, One-Handed Weapon Specialization and Improved Seal of Fury are gone. Stoicism and Shieldsworn are new; Shieldsworn (row 7) makes Holy Strike hit with your shield. Divine Intellect moved in from Holy, Iron Creed went down to 3 ranks, Redoubt now reaches 30% and Improved Righteous Fury 9%. Swift Judgement was reworked into a second Judgement that does not share a cooldown with your normal one.

Blizzard has not posted notes for this hotfix yet; the tree here follows the game’s hotfix data.

Toward level 60

Provisional, and low confidence: every full level 60 Protection build was written before the rework. The likely core at 60 is Reckoning, Iron Creed, Holy Shield, Templar’s Bulwark and Shieldsworn, with spare points in Retribution for Benediction and Improved Judgement. Expect changes once players test the new tree.

FAQ

What is the best Protection Paladin build in WoW Forever?

At level 30: Redoubt, Precision, Sacred Duty, Templar's Bulwark, Shield Specialization, Improved Righteous Fury and Anticipation, ending on Holy Shield. All 21 points go into Protection.

Is Protection good for leveling?

It is safe and good at AoE: gather about four mobs and burn them down with Consecration and Holy Shield. Retribution kills single targets faster, which is why many players tank only in dungeons.

What stats does a Protection Paladin need?

Hit first, then Spell Power for threat, then Stamina, armor and avoidance. Intellect helps mana while leveling.

Is Protection Paladin good in dungeons?

Yes. Consecration holds packs, Holy Shield adds block and threat, and Templar's Bulwark covers emergencies.
