Why this build
How the build works
This Frost Mage build is about freezing targets and hitting them while they cannot move. Improved Frostbolt cuts 0.5 seconds off Frostbolt, and Ice Shards doubles the crit bonus of your Frost spells. Frostbite gives your Chill effects (Frostbolt, Cone of Cold) a 15% chance to Freeze for 5 seconds.
Frozen targets are where the damage comes from. Ice Lance deals 300% more damage to them, and Shatter adds 50% crit chance to every spell against a Frozen target. With Ice Shards, a shattered Ice Lance is your biggest hit. Fingers of Frost at one rank gives Chill effects a 15% chance to make your next spell treat the target as Frozen, so you get Shatter-and-Lance moments even when nothing is rooted.
We chose Fingers of Frost over Permafrost for the 21st point, the opposite of the most common talentsforever order. Ice Lance became much stronger on 30 Oct, and two other guides take Fingers of Frost at 30. Permafrost is the safer kiting pick if you prefer it. Improved Frost Nova takes 4 seconds off Frost Nova, and Ice Block is your escape when a pull goes wrong.
Leveling tips
Spend levels 10 to 14 on Improved Frostbolt and 15 to 19 on Ice Shards, then Frostbite. Ice Lance unlocks at 20 and Shatter at 25. Before Shatter, Ice Lance is only a finisher, so Frostbolt does the work.
Against melee mobs, the classic pattern still works: Frost Nova, move out, then Frostbolt and Ice Lance while they are rooted. Ice Lance now has an 8-second cooldown, so you cannot spam it on a frozen target as in some early beta guides. Frost is the best Mage spec for pulling two or three mobs at once. In dungeons, Blizzard handles packs and Ice Block covers your mistakes.
Changes in WoW Forever
Ice Lance, Fingers of Frost and the reworked Shatter are not in Classic; Frost now has a real damage loop rather than just control. The 28 Oct hotfix moved spell hit to Precision in this tree (it covers all schools). The 30 Oct hotfix raised Ice Lance’s damage against Frozen targets, added Ice Lance to Arctic Reach, made Winter’s Chill boost Cone of Cold and gave Ice Barrier a Frost damage buff.
Toward level 60
Provisional. Most level 60 plans stay almost pure Frost, adding Precision, Frost Channeling, Fingers of Frost 2, Winter’s Chill and Ice Barrier, with a few points in Arcane or Fire. Plans differ on Winter’s Chill (one point or five). Nobody has reached 60 on these trees yet.
